Only Human

No one ever told him he was human.

Harry used to try and fall in love, because that’s what boys his age did. They would think about kissing girls, walking hand in hand with them between classes, giggling with one another during lunch and daydreaming about the other when they separated to different classes.

However, Harry wasn’t a normal boy.

Harry had given up on falling in love at the end of his fourth year when he had come to realize that no matter what he tried, he wasn’t normal. A normal boy was like the one that was rendered lifeless and still after came at him, a vicious dark curse, nothing more than a flash of green light. A normal boy died when they meet death. A normal boy did not live when they weren’t supposed to. If he was normal, he would have died when he was a baby, when that same light came at him. Instead, death had only teased him, brushing against him to leave a scar and an awful memory.

…and it let him live.

Harry gave up being normal after that.

During his second year at Hogwarts, he had one of the most deadly venoms pumping throughout his body, sinking into his heart, eating away at his innards and causing him unrivaled pain. He still managed to survive even though survival was even more than unlikely. Sometime, during his sixth year when he was captured and tortured by Death Eaters, he was feed poison only to get over it just because. He stopped having the sensation of pain sometime after the death of his godfather. It was gradual of course, so gradual that he use to cut himself just to make sure he would feel pain until eventually, he felt nothing.

Harry knew that he was not normal. He had given up trying to be normal a long time ago. Now, he cannot help but wonder if he was even human.

Harry doesn’t find it encouraging when no one answered.

During his seventh year at Hogwarts, war was declared. It was a war of “light” versus “dark” and he was in the center of it all. The “light” had asked him to lead them and the “dark”, unable to kill him, tried to convert him.He fought of the light side at first, because they had convinced him all that it was his destiny. He was able to dissuade death all these years because he was destined to fight in this battle against dark. He fought hard for them too, for five years until one day he came to realize that he didn’t care anymore and told them to fight their own wars.

They told him in reply that one cannot fight destiny and this was what he was destined to do. They tell him that they needed him and it was wrong of him to turn his back on them. It was inhumane for him to ignore the condition of the world.

He could only smile at that.

“No one ever said I was human.”
