Instantaneous Combustion
Chapter 1: Conversation Interlude

-----------------------------------------------------------

                Instantaneous combustion.

It is a scientific term that refers to when two materials are combined and react with one another. Usually, the cases that are recorded involve the materials exploding with one another.

This reaction is highly dangerous.  An absolutely, positively, electrifying reaction.

                Instantaneous combustion…

It occurred to them when their eyes met from across the room.  At first, they were both innocent glances thrown randomly around the coolly decorated room.  That was until their eyes met each other from across the room, and blue brushed against blue, heart beat with heart, mind combined with mind…

It was scandalous the way everything between them seemed to click perfectly with one another.  Like two halves fitting together to become a whole, or a dream slowly swirling itself into a close reality.  And thus, that is the reason why it became natural for him to come up to her, his wine splashing against the coolness of his glass, his feet stopping when he came mere feet in front of her.

                He handed her the wineglass.

She accepted it with a chilling serene smile.

“Will you…” He asked softly before getting cut off by her smiling voice.

                “Yes.”

They were married a scant half an hour later, barely even knowing each other’s name.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes in life, there is a moment when one knows that the person the person standing in front of them is the one that they’ve been waiting for all their lives.  It is the person that they have always dreamed of, longed for, lusted after.  For some people, this discovery may occur sometime later within their relationship between one person and another.  For others this may occur in the very beginning, from the moment their eyes meet.

Instantaneous combustion…” the television blared out. Serena glared at her husband, who was sitting on the bed, staring at the television.  She too stared at the television, becoming appalled with what was playing in front of her.  “You’re watching the Science Channel??”

He let out a sly smile, “Yup.”

She let out a shudder of disgust.  “How can you stand that channel?  It’s a bunch of boring four-eyed men who spend time talking about things that you won’t even use in life.

“What is this?  Instantaneous combustion sounds like something Amy would talk about.  And God knows that girl is the worst.  She practically lives in her lab.  Please, change the channel to something more interesting and useful… I know!  Go to the Food Network!”

“You can cook?”  He asked her in surprised, while contemplating her suggestion.  There were little things that he actually knew about his new wife.  They had only been married for a mere twenty-four hours, and during that time, they hadn’t had any long talks about themselves.

She shook her head vigorously, laughing at his crediting, “Me?  Cook?  I burn water.   I was actually hoping that it would give you some inspiration when you cook dinner for me.”  She wagged her finger as she said the statement in a matter-of-fact tone.

Growling, he grabbed her and threw her onto the bed and began to tickle her side.  She squirmed under his touch.  “You devious little rabbit.  Cook for you, huh?”

He planted a kiss on her lips.

“Mmmm… You’re sweet.  Maybe I should just eat you for dinner.”  His wandering lips began to trace her neck as her laughter began to cease, her eyes rapid with a feverish emotion.  “Darien…” she soon found herself unable to talk anymore as the web of magic slowly spun itself around the two lovers.

No, talk would come later in their relationship.

-----------------------------------------------------------

“So, Darien,” Serena asked while popping a sweet strawberry into her mouth.  “What do you do for a living?”  He stared up at her from her lap, his eyes gazing into her blue eyes as he opened his mouth for her to pop a strawberry into his mouth.  She rolled his eyes and fed him a berry.  “So tell me, what do you do?”

“Mmm… I own a company,” he said and opened his mouth again, his eyes twinkling at the annoyance that built up in her eyes.  Glaring at him, she reluctantly fed him another strawberry to his open mouth.

“Tell me about your company.”  She demanded, as she placed the bowl of strawberries further away, threatening him that she wouldn’t give him anymore if he didn’t tell her.  He rolled his eyes, “I would have thought that you could figure out the name of the company.  It’s Camden, you know, your last name, Corporations.”  His voice was matter-of-factly.

Ignoring his sarcastic comments, her eyes widen, “You own THAT place?”  She thrust a couple of strawberries in his mouth absent-mindedly, almost choking the poor man.  “I always see that building – it’s almost the center of Los Angeles.  Although, I always imagined that the man that owned that building was an old, grumpy, greedy man.”

He let out a scandalized grunt.

“Don’t worry,” she said, stuffing another strawberry in his mouth before he could retort to her accusations, “I don’t think you’re old at all!  Although the grumpy and greedy part will have to have its trail with time.”

Another grunt was heard.  Serena let out a giggle.  “Your company… what does it do exactly?”

“Buy, sell…” He said, attempting to chew and swallow all of the strawberries she had suddenly decided to stuff down his throat.  “We mainly deal with buying a variety of companies and endorsing it’s pursuits.  I own a small magazine, an electronics company, an independent publishing press, a…”

She stuffed more strawberries into his mouth.  “Okay.  I heard enough.”  She said with a hefty sigh.  “I married a business tycoon.”

She stared at him with a sad look, “It’s alright, not all of us can be perfect.”  He sat up then, moving the strawberries far away from him as possible, deciding that the last batch that was placed in his mouth was forced down the wrong way.

“What is wrong with being a corporate man?”  He asked, poking her side.  She smacked his hand aside, “Nothing… I guess.”

“No sliding answers!”  He exclaimed, poking her again.

“It’s just that…” she muttered softly, “They always have female sectaries that are in love with them… And I don’t want to have to compete.”  She gently traced her hand on his strong profile, then lingering her fingers in the softness of his her jet-black hair.  Her voice was heavy with emotion.  “Am right, aren’t I?”

He shifted slightly uncomfortably, “Mmmm… possibly…” She whacked him over the head.  “No shame at all, you men!”  She let out a laugh and then leaned back against him.  “It’s all right though.  I don’t mind fighting for you.  I would do anything for you.”

“And what do you do?”  He asked huskily, his arms wrapping around her, pulling her closer to his body.  She seemed to fit perfectly in his arms, taking a deep breath of her sweet scent that, he decided, smelt like lilies floating within the sea.  It was just like the specs of silver that was in her eyes.  “What is your occupation?”

“Director.”  She stated.  “I get to make movies.”

He stared at her in surprise.  “Really?”

She grinned then, excited at this opportunity to tell him about her own job.  “Yup!  I’m actually slowly moving up the scales … I directed the movies ‘La Morte’ and ‘Kiss Eternal’ and also some other movies that didn’t hit as much popularity as those two.”

“Wow, I’m impressed,” he said with an equally impressed expression on his face.  “I have actually seen those movies.”  She let out a giggle, “I’m going to direct another movie soon called ‘Starless Night’.  I’m really looking forward to it because the plot is absolutely dripping, and the cast is wonderful!!”

Her excitement felt contagious to him, as he found himself anticipating the movie project himself.  “I bet it’ll be wonderful… just like you.”  She beamed at him, her eyes lighting up as her face flushed slightly red at his sweet comment.  His lips soon found hers and burned a trail down her skin.

“Wait… Darien… before you start this again… I have one more question,” she said.  He looked at her then, his eyes sketched with desire, raising his eyebrow in slight curiosity.  She brushed her hand against his cheek.  “Who’s house are we going to move into?  I mean, this hotel is great and all… but we have to go home someday…”

He thought about that for a second, before he came up with a logical situation… of a sort.  “We’ll flip a coin.”  He said simply.  She stared at him oddly.  “A coin?”

“Yes, if the coin lands on heads is your house, and tails is mine.  And from there we’ll find a new house that will fit the needs of both of us… A house that will belong to both of us.”  He had explained, as her lips slowly lifted into a soft smile.  She let out a chuckle, “You, sir, are really strange.”

He let out an impatient sigh, “ ‘A little less conversation, a little more satisfaction.’ ”

                She slapped him playfully.

-----------------------------------------------------------

                The coin landed on tails.

While Darien let out a little cheer, Serena exclaimed that it is only right if it was two out of three.  “Nope, it was an agreement, heads you, tails me, ‘nuff said.”  He responded to her attempts to change his mind.  His strict demeanor told her that he would be unyielding at this.

“Fine then!”  She exclaimed, “You’re helping me move ALL the junk I have at my house though!”  She said to him, as if cursing him to a horrid fate.

He couldn’t help but laugh at the pretense of her words.  “It couldn’t be all that bad.”

                She snorted.

When entering her flat, he found out that it wasn’t all that bad.

                It was worst.
